The musicians of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra have ratified a concessionary two-year labor contract. Members of the orchestra were notified in January that the 2010-2011 season would be slashed by approximately 35%. All aspects of the season were significantly reduced, including Classics and Pops concerts, rehearsal services, educational outreach, and ensemble work. This news was received with great concern, not only for musicians' livelihoods, but for the future of live classical music in our community. After vigorously pursuing a more favorable settlement, the musicians approved an agreement to work under these very challenging conditions.
We, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra musicians, are committed to preserving our orchestra, which has served the people of Southern Arizona for 81 years. We are encouraged by the drastic changes in TSO administrative personnel that are occurring. Although deeply disturbed by the cuts we have been forced to bear, we are optimistic that our organization will move forward to embrace artistic integrity, fiscal responsibility, and continued service to the Tucson community.
Above all else, especially in these discouraging times, we remain committed to our craft, our orchestra, and our belief in the transformative power of music. We thank our audience and donors for your incredible support, and we look forward to seeing you at a TSO concert very soon! |
